(This post is the 50th of what will be approximately 70 posts following 820th anniversary highlights of what history now calls the “Third Crusade.” My novel, The Swords of Faith, tells the story of this legendary clash between Richard the Lionheart and Saladin.)

On April 5, 1192, 820 years ago today, on Easter Sunday that year, Richard lost most of the French forces remaining in the fight for western Christianity in the Middle East. The French had been leaving a little at a time after Richard’s January retreat from the Judean Hills. Richard had asked them to stay until Easter. He threw a large Easter banquet. After the banquet, most of the French left. Not long before this, Richard had received disturbing news from home. His brother John was taking more and more authority, as if he was now King of England. Richard’s officials in England advised him to return home as soon as possible or he might be fighting to retain his position there. Richard faced a grim reality—he needed to settle matters in Outremer and return home. During the coming weeks, he would set aside his own priorities and make a statesmanlike move. But his April would be a turbulent one, with his well-conceived, well-played move to get home taking a wild, unanticipated turn.
