(This post is the 45th of what will be approximately 70 posts following 820th anniversary highlights of what history now calls the “Third Crusade.” My novel, The Swords of Faith, tells the story of this legendary clash between Richard the Lionheart and Saladin.)

820 years ago today, Richard the Lionheart arrived at Beit Nuba, only twelve miles from the objective of his journey over the last year and a half. Morale among many in his camp rose, particularly soldiers from Europe. The advance had them believing they were on the verge of achieving their victory for God. Sure, weather conditions were horrible. Tent poles snapped in the wind. Rain and mud ruined the provisions and made everything difficult, including travel and transport. Saladin’s forces were reduced but not absent. But a quick victory now, the conquest of the city most sacred to their faith, would cure all ills, turning the battle with the elements into God’s gentle musings. Richard the Lionheart set camps and considered his next move. He understood the emotions among the men in his camp. But Richard was a brilliant military man, an experienced tactician. He hesitated. He sought advice. He closely considered the situation. Others could afford the luxury of transient mood and emotion. As the leader, Richard needed to consider specifics. Would any “quick victory” the possible? If not, morale in the mud and rain could change very quickly.
